I love Affiliate marketing and yes it can make you very rich and you dont have to deal with so many things that an online merchant has to worry about. I have been building web sites since 95, I only started affiliate marketing 2.5 years ago. WHY DID I WAIT!!!!! First 6 months was total bombing out, loss after loss after loss. I was working like a dog, day job web design, night job affiliate marketing, 16 hours a day and affiliate marketing losing me money!!

Last month was just incredible, lets say that after costs it was high $xx,xxx - now I really need to get a good accountant, an important point for a successful affiliate marketer. Although I have never made money like that before.

I started off signing up with major affiliate companies and test marketing products.

Firstly I would get some hosting together that allows you to host unlimited domains. Then look at what products you think you could market on PPC and make some money back.

So select the Product, Buy the domain, setup the hosting, make a simple 1 page or more web site, setup some PPC ads and test market with say $50-$100. Then review how much you got back. If you get 50% back thats not bad and means that it could make money if refined etc. If you get under 50% even though it might sound like a good idea, I would just drop it and move on to the next. If you make 75%-%100 back then you know you probably onto a winner. If you make money on your trial 100%+ back, then its full steam ahead.

I think I tried and failed over 100 times. I thought my ideas were so good but who cares about that, if they made money thats what counts. Then I got lucky, actually on a trial I made money, then more money, then more and kept expanding from there. The secret is then to diversify into lots of different markets so you are less likely to get crushed if competition starts killing you.

The problem with Affiliate marketing is competition. There is so much of it and it just keeps growing. When you hear everywhere that selling something in Affiliate marketing is making heaps of money, usually at that stage its too late. There are pros in the market, making heaps and more and more people will be coming in driving up PPC costs. Usually these pros have big budgets to spend on advertising, get good sales, then can cut special deals with companies for getting higher commission, special offers etc.

The best is to try and get something that people don’t know about much yet. Check for affiliate products that have little PPC competition or that you can get cheap traffic for. Keep it to yourself and before you know it you could be the leading affiliate marketer in that niche for your target country. Once that happens then look at expanding into our countries but each will have different amount of affiliate competitors so you need to be careful with.

I am always trying to find something new to get into, something that can cut down my risk. I am always a bit scared that someone can just come along and knock me off. Its always the chance with affiliate marketing but as you get known as a brand leader in a region then the odds get less.

Important point on affiliate marketing, it usually takes around 3 months to get paid, so even though you may be making $$$ you have to have 3 months worth of advertising $$ before you receive your long awaited payment. Then as you grow you spent more $$ on advertising but are still waiting for the bigger payments to come in. Having a few different credit cards and increasing the limit was the way that I sort of handled it but it still gets scary when money is getting really low for ad spend.

Other thing that you really need is luck. Right time, right place. I have been so lucky to get into certain things at certain times.

Another important angle is whether SEO is going to be an important factor. Its super hard to get top rankings in areas making big money. And the crazy thing i find is number 5 isn’t good enough. You need to be number 1 or at least in top 3, its all the bloody PPC ads that get lots of clicks these days. If you are not good at it then maybe time is best spent on PPC. I like SEO and I use an SEO / PPC / Site Sponsorship and custom text ads on major traffic sites as my stats to get traffic.

Since I finally dropped web design, or should I say, finally could drop doing web design for clients a year ago, now I work a lot less and when i want. Some days an hour, other days 12 hours. I have been travelling around Europe this year and working as well. Affiliate marketing is so kool! Laptop and high speed internet is all you need.

From the big boys that I speak to / read about most of them say they basically just use PPC pretty much only and I mean they make crazy $$$ around mid $xxx,xxx a month!!! If thats not proof that affiliate marketing can make you money I dont know what is. They are spending on PPC though hundreds of thousands a month though and you really have to build up to that!
